Pagus Trip

Dry fish flake on the riverbed.
Summer’s long gone, and still selfish sky
refuses to give a-plenty if anything.

Crossing the creviced bedrock,
quiet, dark shadows creep across
the shallows that reap many.

Up the bank on the other side,
watching a column of bodies walk,
an internal monologue drifts

listening to mouths creak
in alien tongue, less language
than sounds with meaning:

Cannot help but think the Capitol’s racket
fixes vulgar disposition to wit: ransom paid to the right
when one means to say r(e)ich.

Before stilled thought wonders afar,
should we keep walking with turned backs
or turn back and return to the polis?
