Trouble Sleeping as a Child
Every night repeating your name over and over
to drive out that red devil with refrain,
no mountain moves, even with a child’s faith;
and without fail — crooked, blood-red, burnt, and skinned hands
peel through, prying open my sealed not-tight-enough eyes
like curtains raised on a stage-frightened Hamlet.

An apparition pushes me to step out
into the unbridled exhaustion,
the naive yearning for grandeur,
the inner-truth turned uneasy dream —
never understood and always misrepresented.
Out from the curtain, the ghost calls
to take this fate, and do my family’s bidding.
