You and I

A professor from Princeton says aloud,
isolated from but a few out-of-sight
galaxies, our world ending will be found.
All the stars will burn out blue and bright white.
Black holes will consume every last atom,
and yet foreseeing a “desolate end” come,
our future history is hard to fathom;
when that last tide sucks out through dead sun sunk
into a pale, dark sky -- what an end --
miraculous if a human stands to witness.

We will be there, you and I, in our children’s children,
to feel the last touch of earth-green existence,
praising Love fearlessly for a life lived
with a beating heart and a soul to be saved.
