Summer Storm
100 plus degree heat is loud
when two fronts meet in the South.
The rain falls in sheets,
while I’m sure the neighbor’s
newborn sleeps.
An electric crack sounds
against the pillars of the covered porch.

The storm rumbles, and we fear it
from a distance;
we revere it for a time,
but soon women and children disappear inside,
as I’m sure the next-door newborn now cries.
Around the house to the garage,
I move alone to hear the atmosphere preach.

Water upon the street pounds.
An already wild cat meows loudly out-of-sorts.
An I-wouldn’t-call-it-cool breeze
lofts a welcomed change and an alive feel.
My body reels with energy.
Hairs stand charged,
and the pores on my arms open.

Lightning is close at hand,
above the trees,
upon the thunder,
amongst the clouds,
ready to gnarl and contort,
calling witness to the trees,
steadfast, stuck, and weathering the storm.

The moment rumbles clear.
Vacuous space ignites,
the charge unquestionable.
Synapses snap-fire between my ears
like lightning bolts from as far as the quantum profound
bottle-caught through rhyme and metaphor:
a thought held through space and time with words.
