Vulture Tree
Tumbling down
a path of wild flowers,
Jett Black dog and I
come upon five large
hanging
on a dead tree
carcass.

Five large hanging on a tree
next to the live wire
of electricity
leading home,
we ran upon that tree
seven-hundred seventy
times already.

Today
was unlike any other.

Today,
from that dead tree
a buzzard slyly said,
“Yo mothufuccus, wus gud?
Wus dead gud?”

So strange,
we tumbled on
yearning to hear
a prophet speaking.
We circled back
around again
as if to prove
we are in
a simulation

of wildflowers
of dogs
of buzzards watching over us
of time barreling
through the weeks since
five large
hanging on a dead tree
spoke to Jett Black dog and me.

Given time
for a second thought,
at the base of that tree,
Jett Black dog and I contemplate
what is good.

“Five large hang.
Five large buzzards hang.
Would you
call that good?
Which one of you
can speak?”

Their words
just as exciting
the second lap
as the first.
This time
the third one up,
on the furthest branch,
said,

“Death in the ravine feeds,
feeds the flowers,
and feeds the buzzards.
Like this dead thing
we hang on,
everything is
hurtling toward life

except that plastic
your kind brings
down
into the ravine.”
