Fertile Ground
If this year tells us
what becomes of our age,
remember the wide-eyed rabbit
shocked by the world
and staring about-face
into a human abyss.

Like time stuck
on a clock hung
on a cold kitchen wall,
a hare stopped in its tracks
is startling brutality
of broken-off reality,
of men killing
not out of necessity
but simply to be
the rabbit’s misery.

Wide-eyed and dead,
left to become
a vessel of death
and maggots in a field,
having seized itself to death,
the dead-eyed faces
of men living
in empty vessels
of abdicated souls
lord over
the rabbit no longer.

Pray fertile death
restores our land,
and brutal men
never retake dominion.
